Women’s Rape and Sexual Abuse Centre (WRSAC)

WRSAC logoWRSAC delivers a Rape and Sexual Abuse Helpline and Support Service offering helpline and outreach services to victims and survivors of rape, sexual assault, incest, childhood sexual abuse and sexual exploitation. The helpline receives approx 1,500 calls a year. Volunteer Support Workers provide ongoing outreach and support, advocacy and counselling to women, girls and their families each year.

 

WRSAC also delivers the Open service to women in Devon and Cornwall involved the Criminal Justice System

Open is a women-centred service, providing holistic support to women in Devon and Cornwall who have offended. Open is a service for women, delivered by women. The service works with women to address the causes of their offending, supporting them to move into more positive lifestyles. . Referrals are accepted as part of a community sentence and for women released back to Devon or Cornwall following a custodial sentence.

 The service offered includes :

·         Housing and tenancy support

·         Budgeting and debt management

·         Self-esteem, confidence and life skills

·         Support with child contact issues

·         Addressing attitudes to offending and tackling the causes of offending

·         Support with communication, relationships and parenting

·         Risk assessment and specialist support with domestic abuse  and/or sexual violence

·         Support to identify need and to access  specialist drug and alcohol services

·         Support  and safety planning for women engaging in prostitution

·         Encouraging women to identify priorities for change , introducing them to new strategies for sustainable change

Open delivers the Engage Women Specified Activity Requirement (SAR).  The Engage Women SAR offers an effective community sentence and aims divert women away from custody by offering courts an alternative to a custodial sentence.
